Physical Development

Free healthcare does not exist in Ecuador. Extreme poverty means that the families in our programme are usually unable to afford the most basic medicines.

Juconi focuses on nutrition, disease prevention and sex education to ensure the healthy physical development of the children and families with whom we work.

We need sponsorship to cover the cost of the family food baskets we deliver to help compensate for the lost earnings of children who no longer work - and to improve the nutritional content of the family diet. These packs, which are distributed once a month, contain essential items such as soya, lentils, brown rice, quinua, and oats, to reinforce the progress made in the nutrition workshops.

We run kitchen gardens and community nutrition workshops for both children and parents to show them how to produce a highly nutritious and balanced diet on a small budget. During family visits, our educators follow up the lessons learnt in workshops to ensure the new skills are being applied.

We also run workshops for parents on how to prevent and detect diseases. Educators and family therapists work to build links with local health centres to secure prompt, low-cost treatment for families in the Juconi programme.
