Ecuador’s educational system does not always provide a stimulating, non-violent environment for children. Few families have books, puzzles or games for the development and stimulation of the children. Equally damaging is the absence of an encouraging, positive and non-violent adult figure in the home or in the school. Juconi families often live with verbal, physical and sexual violence. They need positive role models.

Each family has one child facilitator who works specifically with the street working child and one family facilitator who focuses on the parents and the family as a whole. The majority of Juconi families are big, meaning that significant demands for attention are made on our child and family facilitators.

Needless to say, the presence of a volunteer during a family visit to play with the younger children is a huge help for the team.  As well as freeing up the facilitator to work on a one-to-one basis with the street-working child or a parent, the presence of a volunteer immensely beneficial for younger children’s development. Doing a jigsaw puzzle, listening to problems or reading a story together may not sound like much, but it gives the children much needed individual attention.

Even though your time may be limited, your input can provide a positive learning experience for these children which will make a difference.
